Police on Friday arrested two persons for allegedly attacking a House Surgeon, Biswaranjan Sahu, of the Bhima Bhoi Medical College Hospital in Balangir district on Thursday evening.
The victim sustained critical injuries and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the medical college hospital.
The arrested were identified as Samir Badamali and Raju Sahu. The two accused are relatives of a patient, who was being treated by the doctor at the hospital.
Balangir SDPO Tofan Bagh said the accused were nabbed by police from Gochaapada in Phulbani and they were being brought to Balangir.
Healthcare service was partially affected at the hospital on the day as House Surgeons of the healthcare facility staged a cease-work protest demanding immediate arrest of the accused under the National Security Act (NSA).
Reports said Dr Sahu on Thursday morning examined a woman patient in the presence of a woman doctor and the patient’s guardian after she complained of some gynaecological problem.
However, feeling embarrassed over the treatment, the woman informed his family members.
Later while the doctor was returning to his residence in the evening after duty, he was assaulted by miscreants at Laltikara and he sustained injuries in his head and other parts of the body. He was rushed to the hospital and was admitted to ICU.
Following the incident, irate medicos blocked the main gate demanding immediate arrest of the culprits.
Both the Balangir Collector and SP visited the hospital and inquired about the health condition of the doctor and assured the agitating doctors of nabbing the culprit soon.
