Attack on ED team ghastly incident: WB Governor

Saturday, 06 January 2024 | Pioneer News Service | Kolkata

Taking a strong view of the attack on the Enforcement Directorate officials, Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Friday warned the State Government asking it to take strong action against the offenders who attacked the ED and CRPF officials even as he said, if a government fails in its basic duty, the Constitution of India will take its course. I reserve all my constitutional options for appropriate action.”

The Governor who summoned the State Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and Director General of Police asking them to submit their reports to him, said that the State could not be allowed to degenerate in to a banana republic of sorts.

“Bengal is not a banana republic. The sole responsibility of preventing violence is with the government. The government should act effectively or face consequences,” Bose said adding, “it (attack on ED team) was a ghastly incident. It is alarming and deplorable. A civilised government must stop barbarism and vandalism in a democracy.”

Pradesh Congress president too was severe on the Mamata Banerjee Government asking for immediate imposition of President’s Rule in Bengal. “It seems that the law and order situation has broken down in Bengal … where the ED and even armed CRPF men is not spared then where is the chance of a common man … it is a fit case for President’s Rule … now it is the Governor and the Centre to decide.”

The TMC immediately shot back with State minister Shashi Panja questioning his political leanings. “He is talking like the BJP men do without going into the details,” she said.
