The police are searching for the culprits after a businessman who was also the brother-in-law of a BJP councillor was shot dead by three men in Haridwar’s Roorkee area late on Wednesday night. The culprits allegedly opened fire at the deceased Joginder in Roorkee’s Paniyala area under Gangnahar police station area and fled from the spot. He was reportedly shot five times and died when he was being taken to hospital, said the Haridwar senior superintendent of police Pramendra Dobhal. Joginder was the brother-in-law of BJP councillor Geeta Chaudhary. According to the police, Joginder used to deal in the property business. They said that as per the locals, three men on a bike reached his office and opened fire at him. The accused had fled the scene by the time locals rushed there after hearing the gunshots. The locals and family members found the victim’s body lying in a pool of blood and rushed him to a private hospital but he died on the way. The doctors confirmed his death to the family in the hospital. On the question of the cause of the murder, the SSP said that so far the police only know that the three accused allegedly jumped over the boundary wall to enter the victim’s office and open fire at him. He said, “We have been analysing the murder spot and have gathered some evidence in the case. The body has also been sent for post mortem examination. All we know at present is that the victim had five bullet wounds but we will be clearer about his death only after getting the post mortem report.” The SSP further said that the police are also analysing footage of CCTV cameras installed near the incident site to identify the culprits. Dobhal said that the police understand the sensitivity of the situation and ask locals and others to be assured that the accused will be nabbed soon and brought to justice.
