The Congress, which suffered a shock defeat in Chhattisgarh, will hold a meeting of its legislators on Wednesday.
“The meeting of newly-elected 35 Congress MLAs will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday at Rajiv Bhavan,” Sushil Anand Shukla, head of the state Congress communication wing, said on Tuesday.
The party's in-charge for the state, Kumari Selja, and national treasurer Ajay Maken will be present in the meeting, he said.
According to party sources, the leader of the Congress legislature party may be elected at the meeting.
Among the senior Congress leaders who won the the Assembly elections are former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, former ministers Kawasi Lakhma, Umesh Patel and Anila Bhendia, and former Speaker Charan Das Mahant.
The Congress, which won 68 seats in 2018, was reduced to 35 seats. The Gondwana Gantantra Party won one seat. The BJP bagged 54 seats.
Nine ministers of the Baghel-led Congress government and its state unit chief suffered defeat in the polls.
