Congress seeks action against Sattar

Friday, 05 January 2024 | T N RAGHUNATHA | Mumbai

Turning up the heat on State Minister of Minority Development Abdul Sattar for his questionable language, the Maharashtra Congress on Thursday demanded action against him for shocking instructions to the police to “beat these people like dogs, break their backs” an irate group of people gathered at a programme organised on the occasion of his birthday.

Flagging the issue of lathi-charge ordered by the minister to quell the mob that created ruckus at a programme organised on the occasion of his birthday, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress chief spokesperson Atul Londhe said: “Apart from ordering lathi-charge at the irate group of people, Sattar asked the police to `beat these people like dogs, break their backs, what’s the point of having 1,000 policemen when you can’t even beat up 50,000 people?’”.

“Is Abdul Sattar a minister or a goon? Will Chief Minister Eknath Shinde show the courage to take action against the arrogant Sattar?,” Londhe asked.

Alluding to the lathi-charge that took place at the minister’s birthday function, Londhe said: “Seeing that the program organized by him was causing chaos, the minister got angry and ordered a lathi charge on the audience and the police also did as they were instructed”.

“Are the Maharashtra policemen being used for providing security for the minister’s birthday parties? Seeing the language of Abdul Sattar, he is not fit to be a minister, but Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar do not have the courage to take action against such controversial ministers,” Londhe said.

Controversies are not new to Sattar. His name had figured in the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) scam that broke out in August 2022, while his name came up in the 37 acre grazing land scam Sattar’s PA name came up in bogus raid recovery when he was agriculture minister. Sattar had allegedly used foul language for NCP MP Supriya Sule.

“Sattar has always shown his arrogance of power but now people will make such arrogant and unreasonable Sattars sit at home,” Londhe said.
