Delhi BJP demands apology from INDIA bloc for mocking Dhankar

Thursday, 21 December 2023 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

Delhi BJP leaders have demanded that the Opposition INDIA bloc apologise to the vice president as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was recording "like a monkey" TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee's act of mimicking Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. In a related development, Jat Mahasangh volunteers on Wednesday held a protest march near the Congress headquarters here against the "mocking" of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar by Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee. The volunteers were stopped near the Congress office where the police had put up barricades. The protesters burnt an effigy of the Congress.

A huge political row broke out on Tuesday as Banerjee derisively mimicked Dhankhar during the opposition's protest on the stairs of Parliament against the suspension of MPs, drawing strong condemnation from the ruling BJP.

Vinod Sehrawat, a member of the Jat Mahasabha, said the protest was led by Narayan Singh Sehrawat and Sukhchain. "The Jat community and farmers have come here from Najafgarh area to protest against the mocking of our vice president. There will be a Delhi Dehat Mahasabha on Sunday where the future course of action will be decided. We demand that Rahul Gandhi and Banerjee apologise," Vinod Sehrawat said. Dhankhar claimed that it was an insult to his background as a Jat, his caste, who came from a farmer's family.

Earlier, Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and BJP MP from West Delhi Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma has demanded that the opposition INDIA bloc apologise to the vice president as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was recording "like a monkey" TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee's act of mimicking Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. Bidhuri said Rahul and leaders of INDIA Alliance have insulted Jat community and they should apologise from Dhankhar. Bidhuri also demanded to sack Kalyan Banerjee from the TMC.

Rahul was seen making a video of the performance by Banerjee who appeared to mimic the way Dhankhar walked by leaning forward and made reference to having a spine. In a related development, an advocate has filed a complaint against Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee for his mimicry of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on the premises of the Parliament complex.

"INDIA alliance is showing the level of its wisdom. It is not able to digest its defeat (in the recent assembly polls). They also know that in 2024, the BJP will return to power at the Centre and Narendra Modi will be the prime minister. They are not able to digest all these things," the BJP's West Delhi MP said at Parliament Complex when asked for comment. "So they displayed their frustration yesterday," Verma said.

With Dhankhar's mimicry, the members of the opposition INDIA bloc showed that they can even make fun of a person who is sitting on such a high constitutional post, the BJP leader said. "And their leader Rahul Gandhi was doing videography like a monkey. It was quite strange. We felt very sad," Vermasaid, adding, "I want the entire INDIA alliance to apologise to the vice president."

According to police, a complaint was given by advocate Abhishek Gautam at Defence Colony Police station on Tuesday evening. We have forwarded it to the New Delhi district police.
