Drivers threaten to resume agitation if govt fails on promises

Thursday, 04 January 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The truck drivers have postponed the strike, not ended it and if the government fails to keep its promise made to All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) representatives regarding regulations under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for hit-and-run cases, all unions will resume the strike for an indefinite period. This was stated by representatives of Uttarakhand AIMTC in a press conference here on Wednesday. The state vice president of AIMTC, Anusuya Uniyal said that the Central Government has made such a strict law against the drivers without discussing it with any transport related organisation. If this law is implemented, it is possible that many truck drivers will leave the job and new drivers will not join it. The convenor of Uttarakhand Transport Federation and congress leader Suryakant Dhasmana also stated that a driver earning about Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 cannot even imagine paying a penalty of Rs 10 lakh and serving seven years of imprisonment as proposed under BNS. He said that as promised, the central government must make necessary amendments to the law and bring it before the public or the unions will go on indefinite strike and cause severe traffic jams across the State.
