In a dramatic encounter, a notorious gangster Amritpal Singh, alias Amari — wanted in connection with four murder cases — was shot dead by the Amritsar police in Jandiala Guru near Amritsar on Wednesday.
The incident unfolded on Wednesday morning when Amritpal, following his arrest on Tuesday, was brought to Jandiala Guru by the police to recover hidden heroin and a weapon allegedly in his possession.
The police had apprehended Amritpal on Tuesday, and during the subsequent interrogation, he revealed the location of two kilograms of heroin near Dhar village. The gangster, a member of the notorious Happy Jatt gang, failed to disclose the presence of a weapon at the location.
Amritsar Rural Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Satinder Singh, accompanied by Amritpal, arrived at the canal bank in Dhar village to recover the narcotics. However, Amritpal suddenly pulled out a 9 mm pistol and fired shots at the police, injuring one officer seriously. Another officer narrowly escaped harm as a bullet grazed his turban.
“This person (Amritpal) was arrested yesterday and was wanted in four cases. When he tried to flee, he fired upon our team and one police…During interrogation on Tuesday, he disclosed that he had hidden two kg of heroin. We brought him here to recover the narcotics,” said the SSP.
“In self-defense, the police retaliated, and Amritpal sustained critical injuries. He was immediately rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries,” stated SSP Satinder Singh.
A policeman was also injured in the alleged encounter. Another officer narrowly avoided harm as a bullet pierced through his turban, said the SSP.
The gangster was involved in at least four murders and two attempted murders.
