Migrants bus from Kerala to WB overturns
Baleswar: A bus with 38 migrant workers en route to West Bengal from Kerala overturned near Nuagaon on NH-16 in Baleswar district on Saturday morning leaving at least seven persons with minor injuries. Locals and Industrial Area police personnel reached the spot and rescued the passengers. The injured passengers were rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital.
2 cousins die in bike-car collision in K’mal
Phulbani: A head-on collision between a motorcycle and a car claimed two lives at Barpada village under the Sadar police limits in Kandhamal district on Saturday. The deceased Pradeep Bogar and Naresh Bogar of Alimoda village under the Gochhapada police station in the district were cousins. The duo was returning home after buying a mobile phone from Phulbani when the car hit their bike. An ambulance took them to the District Headquarters Hospital here, where doctors declared them dead. Police reached the accident site and detained the car driver.
Youth found dead in coal-laden train at Nalco
Talcher: A body of a youth was recovered from a container of a coal-laden train that arrived at the Nalco’s Captive Power Plant in Banarpal block of Angul district on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Nakhia Pradhan of Bada Jorada village in the district. Police recovered the body. Though the exact reason behind the death was yet to be ascertained, police suspected that the youth might have died in a mishap while stealing coal. Locals of Bada Jorada staged a demonstration and demanded compensation for the deceased’s family members.
Man hacks friend to death in Gajapati
Paralakhemundi: A man hacked to death his friend over a trivial matter at Khandaba village under the Kashinagar police station in Gajapati district on Friday. The deceased was identified as Dhananjay Jena. Accused Samial Palja was detained by police for questioning. Dhananjay and Samial had a heated altercation over some matter and it took a violent turn when Samial in a fit of rage got hold of an axe and attacked Dhananjay, who died on the spot.
Elderly man trampled to death by jumbo
Bhadrak: A septuagenarian man was killed by an elephant at Mohantipada village under Bant block in Bhadrak district on Saturday morning. Maguni Behera had gone to his mango orchard near a riverbank when the elephant trampled him. The jumbo had already fled the scene when locals reached the spot after hearing the old man’s screams. Elephant herds have been seen over past nine days in the Agarpada area bordering Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts.
B’pur City Hospital docs stage strike
Brahmapur: Doctors and other medical staffs of the City Hospital, Brahmapur on Saturday launched a cease-work agitation, alleging no facility availed at the hospital to fight corona. About six doctors and staffs wearing PPE sat on a dhrana, demanding early provision of safety measures for them and patients. They alleged that corona patients and general patients are being accommodated together at the hospital. Meanwhile, the CDMO has assured that he would take up their demand with the administration soon.
Ganjam CPI seeks Rs 10K for each Odia migrant
Brahmapur: The CPI Ganjam unit has sent a memorandum to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik urging him to make a proper assessment of damages caused by the Cyclone Amhan and provide compensation to affected people soon. The other demands include assistance of Rs 10,000 to family of each Odia migrant worker, distribution of PDS items to all people irrespective of APL and BPL cardholders, procurement of paddy from all farmers who have been issued tokens, free supply of seed, fertilizers and pesticides to farmers, assistance of Rs 5,000 paid to all construction workers and transportation cost reimbursed to migrants.
