In the face of rising concerns over the new COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1, Punjab remains steadfast in its commitment to public health. The state Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh on Sunday conducted a comprehensive inspection of the Government Rajindra Hospital and Medical College at Patiala to take stock of the state’s readiness to combat any potential challenges posed by the variant. Notably, no cases of the JN.1 variant have been reported in Punjab thus far.
Dr Balbir, speaking during the visit, reassured the residents of Punjab that the government is fully prepared to tackle any situation arising from the new variant. The Health Minister emphasized that despite the absence of reported cases, the Health Department remains vigilant and has implemented thorough measures to prevent and manage any potential spread.
With a focus on transparency and preparedness, Dr Balbir underscored the importance of adherence to guidelines and protocols. He assured the public that the Government is committed to maintaining a proactive stance against the pandemic. Acknowledging the dynamic nature of the COVID-19 situation, the Minister urged the public not to panic but to remain vigilant and cooperate with health authorities.
In the context of the JN.1 variant, Dr Balbir highlighted the collaborative efforts between the Health department and the Medical and Research Department. Rigorous examinations and constant monitoring of the evolving situation are underway, ensuring a robust response to any health challenges that may arise, he said, adding that the state government is committed to providing the necessary resources and support to address the situation effectively.
During the inspection, Dr Balbir engaged with healthcare professionals actively involved in managing COVID-19 cases. Among them were Dr RPS Sibia, Dr Raja Parmjeet Singh, Dr Vinod Dangwal, and Dr Sachin Kaushal, who shared insights into the state's preparedness and ongoing efforts.
As per the data available, Punjab has reported 30 cases since November 1, besides one COVID-related death. The health authorities maintained that the genome sequencing to identify the sub-variant type requires a sufficient number of positive cases for accurate analysis, and Punjab, having reported only 30 cases since November 1, is actively working to obtain more samples for comprehensive sequencing.
The state health authorities maintained that the reported cases are well within control. At the same time, the citizens have been urged to get tested in case anyone experiences any symptoms, while emphasizing the need for extra caution for the individuals with comorbidities.
Punjab, which has experienced relatively low COVID-19 cases in recent months, currently has only three active cases — one each in Jalandhar, Kapurthala, and Hoshiarpur.
