Only Congress can defeat itself: Navjot Singh Sidhu

Monday, 31 January 2022 | PNS | Amritsar

Commenting on prevailing factionalism within the Congress’ Punjab unit, the state unit president Navjot Singh Sidhu on Sunday declared that no one can defeat his party, only his own party can do so in the Punjab’s February 20 Assembly elections.

“No one can defeat Congress. Only Congress can defeat itself,” said Sidhu while talking with the reporters. The statement assumes significance as Sidhu is indulged in a game of one-upmanship with the Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. During Rahul Gandhi’s recent visit to the state, both Channi and Sidhu had urged him to announce the party’s Chief Ministerial face for the polls, following which Gandhi had said that the decision in this regard would be taken by the party workers.

Sidhu expressed full confidence in the Congress’ victory claiming that the voters know that Congress will give a strong and secure government in the State. However, on factionalism, Sidhu, in his own unique style, said: “No one can defeat Congress. Only Congress can defeat itself.” Hitting out at his opponent from the Amritsar East constituency Bikram Singh Majithia, fielded by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), the Congress state president said: “He (Bikram Singh Majithia) is ‘Parcha mafia’. He has filed cases against so many people. I haven't lodged a single case against anyone. Everyone knows that Congress will give a strong and secure government. We will make a new Punjab.”

SIDHU DID NOT HAVE ONE ACCOMPLISHMENT TO HIS CREDIT DURING HIS 18-YEAR TENURE: MAJITHIA

Majitha: SAD MLA and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia on Sunday said that Delhi had never given justice to Punjab and that people could not expect any justice from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which had not implemented a single one of the promises made to the people of Punjab in Delhi. Majithia, addressing a public gathering, asked the people to take over his campaign in the constituency so that he could go to Amritsar East and fulfill the wish of its electorate to teach a lesson to the “arrogant” Punjab Congress president Navjot Sidhu.

“Navjot Sidhu did not have one accomplishment to his credit during his last 18 years in politics. During this 18-year period, Sidhu and his wife have been part of the SAD-BJP and Congress governments but have done nothing for Amritsar East. This is why people have appealed to me to contest the elections from there and put an end to their arrogant and self-serving rule,” he said.
