Punjab Minister Aman Arora, mother Sentenced to two-yr jail in domestic violence case

Friday, 22 December 2023 | PNS | Chandigarh

In a surprising turn of events, Punjab Cabinet Minister Aman Arora and eight others, including his mother Parmeshwari Devi, have been sentenced to two years imprisonment by Sunam local court in Sangrur in a family dispute case.

The court's decision, which comes after 15 years, is related to a domestic violence matter filed by Arora’s relative and Akali Dal leader Rajinder Deepa in 2008.

The charges under which the sentences were announced include Section 452 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), pertaining to house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault, or wrongful restraint, and Section 323 of IPC, dealing with voluntarily causing hurt.

Arora was granted bail until December 25, and the court also imposed fines on the accused.

The case revolves around a family dispute, with Rajinder Deepa, Aman Arora's brother-in-law, alleging that Arora and his associates attacked him over property matters. Deepa claimed that Arora, along with others, forcibly entered his home, leading to a physical altercation. Arora's sister is married to Rajinder Deepa.

A case was also registered against Deepa for attacking Aman Arora but later Deepa was absolved of charges after a police inquiry. When police didn't register case against Aman Arora, the Akali leader filed the complaint directly in the court.

Arora, reacting to the verdict, expressed confidence in the judiciary and stated that they had initially reached a compromise with Deepa, who later reneged on the agreement and filed a complaint.

He emphasized that he would appeal to the higher court for justice, asserting that Deepa had physically assaulted him, his sister, and mother. He further mentioned that they had withdrawn their complaint against Deepa following the initial compromise.
