The annual bird counting initiative has kickstarted in Paradip, with four locations, including the PPL factory, becoming focal points under the guidance of Kujang Forest Officer.
Led by Forest Officer Ranjan Mishra, a team of 20 members organized into five groups initiated the bird counting programme on Saturday. The designated areas for bird counting this year include the PPL factory premises in Paradip, Jatadhar Tanda, port, and Hawakhana.
Despite the challenge of dense morning fog hindering the bird counting process, expectations are high for a substantial bird count this year. In the previous year, approximately 22,000 migratory birds were recorded around the PPL fertilizer factory, and a total of 39,000 birds were observed in Jatadhar Tanda, Hawakhana, and Sharwant areas. The favourable weather conditions have prompted the Forest Department to estimate an increased influx of foreign birds this year.
The Paradip PPL headquarters has proven to be a secure spot for migratory birds, with large ponds and trees attracting various species. The Forest Department and PPL authorities are optimistic about witnessing the arrival of diverse foreign bird species this year.
